Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1991
What is your primary product or service?
Pairs of spayed/neutered rabbits available for adoption by qualified people.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I became interested in rabbits when I discovered how intelligent, social, and comical they are, and how few people understood them. I've had adopters tell me that, as much as they've loved their cats and dogs, they will never again be without house rabbits.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Breeders and pet stores sell rabbits without providing information about the necessity of spaying or neutering (each of which can cost several hundred dollars). They often fail to sex rabbits correctly, with the result that people who think they have two same-sex rabbits, discover the error when a litter of babies is born. To make matters worse, the female will already be pregnant with a second litter, because rabbits often mate immediately after babies are born. Breeders, pet stores, and even animal shelters provide very little, if any, information about rabbits, whereas we provide 6 hours of training for every adopter.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
One, which is in Broomfield.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We avoid making our location public, because if we did, we'd probably have 20 or 30 rabbits left on our doorstep every day. When people go to our website (www.coloradohrs.org), and complete an application to adopt, we give them directions. The application doesn't commit them to anything.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, check, and credit card.
Which areas do you service?
All areas close enough for people to be able to drive here. We've placed rabbits with people throughout Colorado, as well as in New Mexico and Nebraska.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Nancy LaRoche runs the daily operations, but another 200 volunteers help.
What are your hours of operation?
We do everything by appointment.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
The bunnies you placed with us are very happy, and so are we!!
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
—Mohandas Gandhi
